Game Overview

Lookouts is a heartfelt romance visual novel that follows the story of two trans masc gay outlaws navigating the rugged frontier of the old west. As they escape the shadows of their pasts, they find comfort and companionship in each other, daring to imagine a future filled with possibility. The game is a significantly expanded version of the original, created for the Gay Western Jam, now offering around 45,000 words of immersive storytelling and a playtime of roughly 5 to 6 hours.

For those who want to experience the roots of the story, the original jam version is available to play online.

How to Play

Progress through the story by clicking or pressing the spacebar to advance dialogue. A menu bar appears in the top right corner when you hover your mouse or tap the screen, giving you access to game options and settings. If you’re playing the browser version, please be patient during loading—slower internet connections may require a minute or two for everything to appear. The game is working behind the scenes, even if it seems stuck at first.

Content Warnings

This game includes themes and scenes involving alcohol use, smoking, gun violence (with sound effects), gun-related deaths, blood, injuries, mild transphobia, and discussions of racism and settler violence. While injuries are not described in graphic detail, there are visual cues and references that may be sensitive for some players.

Development Team

Lookouts was crafted with care by Col, who handled the art and character design, and Hawky, who took charge of programming and story development. The game’s evocative soundtrack was composed by Jamiee from fakegamercomics, adding depth and emotion to the experience.
